Metrology awareness workshop at the University of Nouakchott

As part of the awareness activities of the project ‘Strengthening Quality Infrastructure for Sustainable Economic Development in Mauritania’, funded by the German Metrology Institute (PTB), the National Office for Standardization and Metrology (ONANOR) organized an awareness workshop at the University of Nouakchott. Aimed at integrating metrology into higher education programmes, the workshop was held over two days, 14 and 15 April 2025, at the university’s Faculty of Science and Technology. Its main objectives were, on the one hand, to promote metrology principles among science and technology teachers so that students nearing graduation and entry into professional life could acquire the values of measurement science; and, on the other hand, to prepare the introduction of metrology as a cross-disciplinary module for the next academic year (2025 – 2026).

Participants included the directors of Polytechnique Mauritanie and ISET Rosso, a metrologist from ONISPA, officials from INRSP, heads of vocational schools in mining and public works, and professors heading chemistry, mathematics and geology departments. Among the officials, we were honoured by the presence of the President of the University of Nouakchott, the Director General of ONANOR and his deputy, the Dean and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, and the representative of the German partner. This meeting was the result of fruitful cooperation between the National Office for Standardization and Metrology (ONANOR) and the University of Nouakchott, marked by the signing of a partnership agreement between the two institutions.
