The National Office for Standardization and Metrology,

It is a public industrial and commercial institution headquartered in Nouakchott, under the supervision of the Ministry of Mines and Industry, represented by its Director General, Mr. Lassana Adama KAMARA

The National Office for Standardization and Metrology (ONANOR) is responsible for:

  •  Contribute to the development and implementation of government policy in standardization, metrology and conformity assessment: that is, identify, analyse and address the needs of the public and private sectors in standardization, metrology and conformity assessment;
  • Establish, maintain and revise national standards that meet local needs, and ensure access to international standards and other normative technical documents;
  • Promote the use of standardization and metrology in the public and private sectors, and monitor developments in standards;
  • Establish the national conformity mark and certificates of conformity to Mauritanian specifications for products, services and persons. The Office manages quality marks, defines their usage rules and grants usage rights;
  • Establish a national metrology system through the creation of a national reference metrology laboratory;
  • Ensure the operation and management of the national metrology, certification and accreditation systems;
  • Preserve and maintain national measurement standards that enable traceability to the International System of Units;
  • Assist public authorities in controlling measuring instruments;
  • Register, examine and issue opinions on authorization applications submitted by installers and repairers of measuring instruments;
  • Contribute to the development of technical regulations for measuring instruments;
  • Contribute to improving the quality of industrial and commercial products and the quality of services;
  • Provide technical support and train staff in standardization, metrology and conformity assessment;
  • Monitoring bilateral and multilateral international agreements and representing the country in international and regional bodies operating in the fields of standardization, metrology and conformity assessment;
  • Carry out all tasks assigned to it by the public authorities within its remit.
